The Covid-19 confinement period has brought its share of questions and uncertainties.
As a fashion photographer in Montreal, I got approached to answer this question.
» What are some of the most creative ways to market your work as a photographer through social media? »
The era of social media has allowed photographers to market their images in a number of different ways. For my part, I combine several different techniques which so far have worked well.
Influencers:
The temptation to photograph influencers is a fairly easy and accessible technique. If done right, can allow photographers to gain visibility quickly. For my part, this is a technique that I use in moderation! Indeed, I prefer to be selective in this approach and to collaborate with influential people who arein direct connection with my style of photography. So their subscribers are very similar to mine. This type of collaboration works well for me and gives me excellent visibility close to my target persona. The idea is to go find a great exposure and new subscribers who will have an emotional connection with my work and that of the personality. The quality of subscribers is much better than the quantity.
Contests:
A few times a year, I organize contests on my networks. Indeed, I like to have a photoshoot shot! Usually I give a photoshoot with a theme and artistic direction that is already planned and worked out. This way I create totally unique contests! Thus, I differentiate myself from other photoshoot contests to be won in my region. In short, it allows me to put forward my ideas and creative concepts while attracting potential future clients.
Staging for editorial photoshoot:
I have always been inspired by photographers Tim Burton and Tim Walker. I love the concepts of directing and the creation of cinematic sets. Sharing my creative process is one of the creative ways to put my photography style forward on social media. Indeed, I love to « tease » my subscribers by sharing them with glimpses of what I’m creating at the studio. Finally, I find it a great way to integrate my followers into my creative concepts and to share exclusive content with them.
Use videography to promote my photographs:
Since the start of 2020, I have started using video for various promotional purposes. Indeed, I created a presentation video in which people get to know me. At the same time, they can discover more in depth my style of photography. The video creates an immersion during a photoshoot. It’s a great way to introduce yourself as an artist. This way people can first discover my style of photography and then can discover my personality and the way I work in the studio.
Also, as I explained above, when I create staging for photoshoots, I like to incorporate a professional videographer into my project. This one can carry out a professional assembly of the photoshoot, which allows me to present my work under a cinematographic angle and complementary to my photography. The sound, the music and the shots come to immerse my subscribers in a complete universe and totally different from other photographers.
Finally, before I showcase my images and a professional video, I especially like teasing my followers with a few quick previews of what I’m creating. Usually, these behind the scene videos are made live with my cell phone and directly posted on Instagram in my stories.
Instagram Takeover:
Seizing the opportunity to make an Instagram Takeover is a great opportunity to seek visibility from a specific community. By collaborating with companies in the field of photography, I organize Takeovers on their platform. In my last such collaboration, I presented my creative process for creating an image, while explaining the equipment I was using.
Sharing my knowledge and experience with other photography enthusiasts is a very enriching process on many levels. In addition, I find it a good method to get closer, to connect and to exchange with people who appreciate my work.
Web exposure during containment (covid-19):
During this uncertain and confining period, I participated in a web exhibition that brought together several international artists. This exhibition was accessible free of charge via social networks. I exhibited the images from my last series « Lost in the Wonderland« . This exhibition was usually only presented in Toronto (Canada). Technologies have made it possible to transport this exhibition to the web and make it accessible to the whole world.
Blog & interview:
We’re all looking for premieres and exclusive content! This is why I love to use blogs and interviews to deliver unique content. So I can then share this new information on my social networks and at the same time redirect my subscribers to my entire blog on my website.
Blogging and interviewing are great techniques for adding text content to a website. Visitors to my site can get to know me through these articles.
