7 creative ways to market your photography work on social media
Affinity spotlight interview conducted by Charlotte Thomson-Morley
What are some of the most creative ways to market your photography through social media?
The era of technologies and social media allows us as photographers to market our images and our talent in several ways in order to gain visibility and or notoriety.
For my part, I combine several different techniques which so far have worked well.
Collaborate with Influencers:
The temptation to photograph influential people (influencers with a lot of subscribers) can be a technique that is generally quite easy and accessible to photographers who want to gain visibility quickly. For my part it is a technique that I use in moderation, and not repetitively and or excessively. I prefer to be very selective in this approach and collaborate only with influential people who are directly related to my style of photography and whose subscribers are very similar to mine. This is the type of collaboration that works best and that gives me excellent visibility near my target persona. The idea is to seek visibility and new subscribers who will have an emotional connection with my work as well as that of personality. The quality of subscribers is much better than the number.

Organize Contests / draw a photo shoot:
A few times a year I organize contests on my networks. Generally, I like to have a photoshoot shot with me. I love bringing this experience to life and making it accessible to everyone to have a professional photo shoot. Often, I shoot a photoshoot with a theme and an art direction already planned and developed. This way, I create totally unique contests and differentiate my contests from all others in my area. In addition, it allows me to put forward my creative ideas and concepts while attracting potential future clients who would in turn like to create unique photoshoots.
Have a unique photographic artistic style:
I have always been inspired by photographers Tim Burton and Tim Walker. I love the concepts of directing and the creation of cinematic sets. One of the creative ways to showcase my style of photography on social media is to share my creative process. I love teasing my followers by sharing glimpses of what I’m creating in the studio. It gets my subscribers excited and then they can’t wait to see the end result. For my part, I think it’s a great way to integrate my subscribers into my creative madness and share exclusive content with them. It is also an excellent technique for diversifying content on different platforms. For example, the final retouched photo could be published on Instagram since this platform also acts as my portfolio. On Tiktok, I could publish all the behind the scene content and the creation of the sets. The important thing is to develop a strategy and take advantage of your social media.

Use videography to promote my photographs:
Since 2020, I have been using video for various promotional purposes. By collaborating with artists from the video industry, I created a presentation video in which people get to know me and discover my style of photography through an immersion during a photoshoot. It’s really a fabulous way to present yourself as an individual and an artist, since most of the time I use social media for my works. This way, people first discover my style of photography and then can discover my personality, the way I work on a set, etc.
Also, as I explained above, when I create staging for photoshoots, I like to incorporate a professional videographer into my project. This one can therefore make a professional montage at the end of the photoshoot which allows me to present my work from a cinematographic angle and complementary to my photography. The sound, the music and the shots come to immerse my subscribers in a complete universe and totally different from other photographers.
Finally, before presenting my images and a professional video, I particularly like to “tease” my subscribers with some quick previews of what I am creating. Just to make your mouth water and get the excitement going before I plan to post the edited photos. Generally, these “behind the scene” videos are made on the spot with my cell phone and directly published on Instagram in my stories or on Tiktok.

Create Instagram Takeovers:
Seizing the opportunity to carry out an Instagram Takeover is a very, very good opportunity to seek visibility with a very specific community. For my part, by collaborating with companies in the field of photography, I organize Takeovers of their platform. During my last collaboration of this type, I had presented and explained all my creative process in the creation of an image, while presenting the equipment that I used and the reason why I used this equipment. This first collaboration was done with the 500px photography platform, which has around 15 million subscribers on their website.
Sharing my knowledge and experience with other photography enthusiasts is a very enriching process on many levels. In addition, in my case, I find it a good method to get closer, connect and exchange with people who appreciate my work.
Online exhibition (on the web) during confinement (covid-19):
During this uncertain and confining period, I participated in a web exhibition that brought together several international artists. This exhibition was accessible free of charge via social networks. I exhibited the images of my last series “Lost in the wonderland”. While this exhibition was usually presented only in Toronto (Canada), this new way of doing things has made the exhibition accessible to a greater number of photography fans around the world.
Blog & interview:
We’re all looking for premieres and exclusive content! This is why I love to use blogs and interviews to deliver unique content. Thus, I can then share this new information on my social networks and at the same time redirect my subscribers to the entire blog or interview on my website.
The blog and the interview is a great way to add text content to a website. Visitors to my site can get to know me through these articles. People are curious and like to read and discover the artist, his achievements, his ambitions, his successes, etc. Interviews are a great way to talk about yourself and gain credibility. The backlinks generated by these articles are also very good for the organic referencing of its website.
